We made it…

Here we are safe and sound in Hoima!
The days of travel between SFO and kampala were long! Kampala is a typical big city. On the first day we got a tour around town by Fr Robert’s cousin who is local. All interesting but Linda and I were both very tired. We stayed in a nice guesthouse/hotel and the next day we traveled to Hoima. It took about 4 hrs, the last third was by dirt road. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be though….just like a fire road with an occasional pothole. We made several stops off to visit with locals. Hoima is a small town with just a few thousand peeps. The guesthouse we are in is limited but safe and very clean (only cold water and occasional black-outs). Yesterday we went to Murchinson Falls NP. It took 4 hrs of dirt roads to get there (not as flat as to Hoima), but it was amazing! Saw our first significant wildlife: tons of hippos (literally ;>) a few elephants, eagles….not to mention the falls.
Today was our first day off, we finally got to catch up on sleep and find an internet cafe. Earlier we had lunch at the Bishop’s house.
I haven’t had time to put together any of the already 300+ pictures I’ve taken, but hopefully by next post.

Not sure what tmr has in store for us yet…On SAt we get picked up by our guide company which will be taking care of us until Feb9th, including our Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda. During that time it may not be possible to post.

It is hot here, it is pretty dusty too. The food has been decent and the people overwhelmingly friendly and polite! Although we do stand out …A LOT!

  3. Have you seen any good bugs or snakes yet? (Hippos are kind of hard to miss.)

“…friendly and polite.” Technological advancement does not a civilization make.

  4. Hi Tori!

We’ve kidnapped Chris and are forcing him to watch American Idol and Friday Night Lights with us. He is outside making a salami sando.

The pictures of the hippos are awesome. Take me with you someday. We’ve been roadbiking everyday since you’ve been gone….Kidding. I didn’t even make it to the gym tonight.

Okay, well can’t wait to hear more about your trip. See you when you get back.

    Hugs, Tess
